How to style your marquee interior

Marquees are widely used in outdoor events, and it’s easy to see why.

They strike the perfect balance between elegant and casual, keeping things low-key but still ensuring that the occasion has plenty of glamour. 

What’s more, they’re also a great cost-effective option, which is as customisable as any conventional or indoor venue.

Themes 

First, you’ll need to determine your theme. 

When it comes to a theme, the opportunities are endless. It can be as creative or as classic as you like! 

For example, you could style your marquee following themes such as: 

• A theme based around your destination (e.g. tropical or beach)
• A theme based on the time of year (e.g. summer, autumn or winter wonderland)
• Rustic, vintage or bohemian
• Rural and floral
• Minimalist 
• Vintage glamour 
• Classical or elegant 
• Retro, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s
• Music festival 

Then, this theme will lay the foundations for the rest of your design decisions. 

Colours

Then, once your theme has been determined, decide on your colour palette for the marquee. 

This is also completely flexible, and gives you lots of room for personalisation. For example, you could choose bold colours, muted colours, pastels, monochromes, metallic colours, and so on. 

From there, think about how you can incorporate this colour scheme into all of your interior elements. 

Layout

Marquees are brilliantly versatile, particularly when it comes to their layout. You can either leave it as one big open space, or segregate the interior into multiple different sections. 

For example, you could add fabric or temporary walls in selected areas, to neatly divide up the space into different areas. Or, with a square or rectangular marquee, you could each corner its own specific purpose. 

Alternatively, you could use the size of the space available to dramatic effect, and create a big bold centrepiece right in the middle of the marquee. 

Signage

Custom signage is one of the biggest events trends of the year, and it is ideally suited to marquee-based events. 

This is a great way to make an impact with your venue’s entrance, or create a striking feature piece for its interior. 

Custom signage can include everything from welcome boards to seating charts, vintage-style bulb signs or letters, and even neon strip light signs. The choice is yours! 

Linings and Drapes

To achieve a really dramatic effect, you can add flowing ceiling drapes (aligning with your colour theme) to your marquee. 

Then, to create a continuous feel, the same fabric colour can be used in your tablecloths, napkins, cushions, and so on. 

Lighting

Bespoke lighting gives you almost limitless possibilities for personalisation. For example, you can choose from lanterns, light letters and signs, chandeliers, hanging lights, fairy lights, large light fixtures, electronic candles, and so on – all completely aligned with your chosen theme. 

Flooring

Something that people often don’t know about marquees is that you can actually choose to add a custom flooring to the venue. 

You can choose between hard flooring, carpeting or even leaving it bare. This decision will depend on the vibe of the event, the activities you have planned and, of course, your chosen theme and colour palette. 

Furniture

When it comes to furniture, you can really bring the venue to life. 

Thanks to the expanse of space that they offer, marquees can accommodate a huge range of furniture. Whether it’s long dining tables or plush sofas and cosy seating areas, a large dance floor or activity stations, a marquee gives you complete flexibility!
