Do Marquees get Hot in the Sun?
During the spring and summer in particular, marquees are one of the most popular choices for parties and event spaces.
When the sun is shining, a customised and modern marquee creates a stunning space for any occasion.
On the flipside however, one of the most common questions that our customers ask us is, ‘what happens if it gets too hot?’. On particularly warm days, the sun can cause the temperature inside a marquee to rise beyond a comfortable point.
Thankfully, there are lots of effective ways to maintain a consistent and pleasant indoor temperature for your marquee, even on the warmest days!

How can the sun affect marquee temperatures?
Marquees are designed to absorb sunlight so that they keep warm throughout the day. After all, it’s easier to cool down a warm outdoor space than it is to heat one up!
If there are no clouds blocking the sun, and the marquee is exposed to direct sunlight, it can heat up surprisingly quickly (even in the winter).
So, keep an eye on the weather forecast and the sky, and if the clouds look like they’re going to part for a considerable period of time, ensure the space is getting enough airflow. We’ve shared some strategies for maintaining stable, comfortable temperatures below.
Tips for keeping your marquee cool
Firstly, if it’s set to be a warm day with minimal cloud cover, we would recommend choosing a traditional marquee, rather than a clear roof marquee.
This is because, although clear roof marquees look fantastic, in full sun, they act like a greenhouse. They absorb all the sun’s heat and lock it inside, just like a glass greenhouse does.
For these glorious days, opting for a traditional marquee will significantly reduce the risks of temperature spikes. What’s more, you can achieve a similar effect by rolling up the sides of the marquee. Not only is this a great way to achieve an open outdoor feel, but it will also create natural airflow.
Other effective strategies for keeping your marquee comfortable during warmer weather include:
- Choosing a white or pale-coloured marquee (so that it reflects the sun, rather than absorbing it)
- Hiring and installing fans
- Positioning large windows or openings so that they aren’t south-facing (to avoid the most intense points of sunlight exposure)
- Providing shaded outdoor seating areas
- Adding thermal linings to your marquee (to further reflect heat out of the space)
